I am lucky enough to have mother with a lot of patience and time on her hands. She makes homemade tortillas every day, need I say more? I will anyways. My mother grew up poor in a very small town in Mexico in the 1940's, she learned how to cook from her mother, who grew up an orphan thanks to the Mexican Revolution in the early 1900's therefore was self suficcient by a very early age. My grandmother was a perfectionist -trait which THANKFULLY my mother did not inherit- and expected everything be done precisely, including the cooking, so the way my mother cooks is the way it was originally done decades ago. As a child I remember my mother making very simple, typical mexican meals (not tex-mex) and that is what I grew up with. As a teenager and young adult I did not take interest in learning any of these recipes from her, but now my kids demand I cook like "Tita". For a while now I have been pondering upon the idea of getting all her recipes and techniques and she is so willing and happy to share them. Perhaphs some day I will too, cook like her for my grandchildren.
